Woodruff, one of four sons, grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. His parents were both real estate agents. While majoring in English at Colgate University, he was active in lacrosse, soccer and ski racing. He went to University of Michigan Law School, where he played rugby and studied Mandarin Chinese.
