GTOs on the Road

Once every five years, a handful of the world's most devoted auto aficionados wheel out the holy grails of their collections--the $20 million Ferrari 250 GTO--for an exclusive rally through the South of France or some similarly ridiculous location. This time around, I was lucky enough to tag along for the ride, a four-day wine-soaked tour of Napa Valley that was sponsored, or more like curated, by the good folks at Moët & Chandon.

Twenty-one of the 36 GTOs ever made (all manufactured between 1962 and 1964) were flown in from as far away as Japan, forming a high-octane motorcade that included everyone from Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason to luxury goods guru Lawrence Stroll to Mexican billionaire Carlos Hank Rhon. The highlights? A seven-course chef's menu at the French Laundry prepared by Thomas Keller himself, a 100-mph spin around Sonoma's Infineon Speedway, and, of course, hearing nearly two dozen GTO engines purring in unison--a sound rarer than the call of a Dodo bird. -- HUDSON MORGAN
