CES Oddities

For the world's largest consumer electronic show hawking the latest, most cutting-edge gadgets, CES is a decidedly old-school experience: at the Las Vegas Convention Center, long lines for paper a badge that hangs around your neck to gain entrance; hot dogs and nachos; long lines for bus shuttles back and forth to the casinos; business card swapping; being weighed down with hundreds of pounds of promotional material printed on paper; long lines.

Still, the show always has a few cool products that make the trip worth it. This year, I was struck by the lack of overall innovation and the downright weirdness of some of the gadgets. And here are the top five most absurd products you can expect in 2008.

1. Taser C2
Ever want to listen to Judas Priest's "Breaking the Law" to drown out the screams of "Don't tase me, bro!" as you reach for your taser? Hopefully not. But Taser's new C2 personal taser, "designed with your lifestyle in mind," now comes in leopard print, and will soon be available with a leather music-playing holster (MPH) with 2 gigs of storage for your favorite tunes. Crank it up. Taser.com; $375.

2. AlcoHawk PT 500
Why wait until you're pulled over by the police to be administered a breathalyzer test? The AlcoHawk PT 500 "quickly and accurately screens for the presence of alcohol from .000% up to .400% BAC." One more for the road? Let's see... Q3i.com; $299.99.

3. Wii shotgun
Clearly, those poorly pixilated ducks in Duck Hunter are just not getting the message. CTA Digital ups the verisimilitude ante with gun accessories boasting an "authentic feel" and, despite the white color, all too canny looks. Suitable for kids? Ahhhh. Ctadigital.com; price TBD.

4. Panasonic 150-inch Plasma HDTV
Forget high-definition TV -- the new thing everyone wants is a "life screen," on which people can stand 7-feet tall and ride a horse right through your living room. Breaking last year's record by a whopping 42 inches held by Sharp, this is the big man's house now. Panasonic.com; price about $150,000.

5. Burmester B100 loudspeakers
Yes, they cost a six-pack more than $90,000. But listening to these speakers was the single most extraordinary audio experience I've ever had. Standing in suite at the Venetian with horrible acoustics, a CD ripped from a PC was thrown on. Elvis sprang into the room singing Fever, and I had chills for the rest of the night. Burmester.de; price $89,995. --MICHAEL MRAZ
