The Secrets of Bullfighting
To better appreciate the art of the bullfighter, Men's Vogue asked Coleman (who goes by his one-word professional name), founder of the California Academy of Tauromaquia, to describe the technique and flair required for a brilliant performance in the ring. As told to Barrett Baffert. (Photographs by Gerry Campos)

A bullfight is separated into three stages: la suerte de varas, la suerte de banderillas, and la suerte de matar. While a typical performance involves up to six bulls, individual bulls perform for up to 25 minutes. During la suerte de varas, the torero, or bullfighter, uses a gold and magenta colored cape called a capote to attract the bull. Any stylistic use of the capote is called a lance, with the veronica being one of the most fundamental. When properly executed, the veronica forms a perfect balance of technique and posture. It serves to almost teach a bull — that behaves chaotically in the early moments of a performance — how to charge beautifully.
