sites we like
While all car sites and internal combustion-crazy blogs are created equal, let's face it--some are more equal than others. With that in mind, we'll occasionally list a few that we like to visit (and revisit). Such as:
The Tucker Club: The official site of the Tucker Automobile Club of America honors and celebrates the maverick car maker Preston Tucker, a guy who envisioned building "The Car of Tomorrow" and did just that--until the rest of the American auto industry decided to crush his dreams, and his company. It's an ugly (if unsurprising) tale of fear and greed overcoming imagination and daring, but the members of the TACA keep Preston T.'s flame burning. (Thanks to the Tucker Club for the photo.)
Top Gear: From the U.K., a full-tilt site featuring new product reviews, reports on breakthrough technologies, motorcycle news, videos, and guides to buying and selling used and vintage cars.
Jalopnik: "Jalopnik loves cars. Secret cars, concept cars, flying cars, vintage cars, tricked-out cars ..." So begins the ode to autos on Jalopnik. Happily, the site walks (or drives) the talk: A recent visit brought us face to face with quick, informed commentary on and images of Reggie Jackson's '69 Camaro, a Mark Ecko-designed Pathfinder, and the Hennessey Viper, plus all sorts of reviews, videos, and strong opinions.
Helmet Hair: A motorcycle blog maintained by a Danish guy in Copenhagen, Jesper Bram, who just happens to write all his posts in perfectly comprehensible, conversational English. (Commenting on Choppers, Inc. owner Billy Lane's involvement in a Florida traffic accident that killed a motorcyclist, Bram observes that "Those acts of God really stick it in and break it off." Lane, by the way, pled not guilty to a DUI manslaughter charge. Gotta keep an eye on that case.)
Jalopy Journal: Nothing fancy. These guys and gals "spread the gospel of traditional Hot Rods and Kustoms to hoodlums worldwide," which as far as we can tell means that they build and re-build badass machines with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of all-American DIY grit. A clean, nicely designed site dedicated to nasty, balls-out motoring. (Thanks for the photo, Ryan.)
