Sound InvestmentsLimited-edition amplifiers (above: a Ken Shindo classic), art frames, bold furniture—in short, designs built to last.
For over 30 years Shindo Laboratory has been creating the ultimate modern stereo with bygone technology, using increasingly rare vintage tubes. Founded by the audio designer Ken Shindo, this small company's amplifiers, turntables, and speakers are painstakingly handmade in Kawagoe, Japan. With their distinctive green metal chassis and glass tubes that emit a copper-colored glow, Shindo's amps are as interesting to the eyes as they are to the ears.

Many consider the father-and-son duo who run the appealingly cluttered Lacy Gallery the most knowledgeable and useful framers in Europe. Colin and David Lacys' vast inventory includes exquisitely carved wood and gilded specimens, offering each browser a crash course in art history—in Neoclassical flourishes, Orientalist splendor, Victorian stolidity, or Baroque extravagance. There is no painting, no matter how unusual, that the Lacys can't complement.
Jared Bark used to focus on late-twentieth-century minimalism—Donald Judd was one of his early customers. But he has gradually worked backward in art-historical time. Now, in addition to the designs he creates for painters such as Jasper Johns, he customizes frames for Impressionist masterpieces. His prices range from $300, for a simple wood and Plexiglas design, to more than $15,000, for an exceptionally labor-intensive frame crafted with white gold that appears woven.
