The Power Boot

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger puts some wild back into Western governance. By Nicholas Mosquera

A typical loafer just wouldn't look right on Arnold Schwarzenegger — bodybuilder, last action hero, gubernatorial incumbent. Enter Scott Emmerich, the El Paso – based Bootmaker to the Stars who has designed roughly 40 pairs for Arnold since his Terminator days. The stately pointers seen here (valued at $10,000 and made from peanut-colored alligator-tail leather emblazoned with the California seal) are reportedly Arnold's favorites among 12 such pairs he purchased after his 2003 election victory. Emmerich has been pounding soles since 1980 and has a client list ranging from the late Johnny Cash to John Kerry to Tom Cruise. While Arnold may not be his best customer — the Sultan of Brunei owns hundreds of boots — he is the buffest. The two met over 25 years ago at Venice's Muscle Beach. Describing the Governator's latest spoils — Trick or Treat, a pair studded with sterling silver skulls — Emmerich admits, "He has a shoe fetish." That's putting it mildly.
