Photojournalist Samantha Appleton's big break came in April 2003, when she drove from Jordan to Iraq just after the fall of Baghdad. The pictures she shot that spring and on subsequent trips capture the chaos and brutality of war, as well as quieter (and equally compelling) quotidian moments—men playing dominoes in a café; police cadets preparing for duty; families mourning their dead.
